One of the very first craft gin distilleries in Western Australia, The West Winds features Australia’s most awarded range of gins, holding three Australian Champion Gin awards alongside a large number of other national and international awards at leading spirits competitions.
Flametree were asked to overhaul The West Winds' brand to create a strong design for application across all their products and marketing collateral which, naturally, included their packaging.
The Brief
Flametree was tasked with updating the look of The West Winds Gin's core range of gins, alongside the re-brand package that was also undertaken by our team. A key requirement was to retain its original aesthetic qualities to maintain the momentum of this growing brand, while simultaneously giving the range a fresh and updated image.
The Project
The team at Flametree began the project by delving deeply into the navally themed West Winds Gin brand and product line, it being one of the earliest players in Australia's fast growing movement of independent gin distilleries. Another strong factor was its location, Margaret River. With its reputation for beautiful coastlines and pristine landscapes, the theme of the brand was taken to a new level. We saw plenty of potential for creating a mythology around the West Winds name and its three main gins, spearheaded by the introduction of the swallow, a bird that has been significant to sailors throughout history. In addition to this, the styled visuals of waves, ships and lighthouses added further nods to past while also presenting a bold new look for the modern audience. The theme we created has a natural richness that can be seamlessly expanded to complement broader advertising promotions, and has seen the company reach new heights as one of Australia's premier gin brands.
