'Drill to Mill' The Independence Group Story
The Independence Group is one of the last Australian-owned diversified miners and 'Drill to Mill' is the story of the making of the company.
This 220-page, coffee table book explores the 17-year journey from an idea, formed around a kitchen table, to a company with a current market cap of seven billion dollars, employing thousands of people across Australia.
The Brief
Flametree Creative had the pleasure of working closely with its author, Barry Avery, to produce a well illustrated, easy to read book that serves to document this important contribution to Western Australia's corporate history.
Having worked with Barry before on several other mining company histories he knew the 'drill' and supplied chapter text files and images in an orderly and easy to understand manner. This made our job much easier when it came to organising the layout of 200 pages and hundreds of photos. The process started by presenting to the client a sample of pages showing the arrangement of text on a typical page, type style and size, heading treatments, colours and picture placement. With some minor tweaking we were given the green light to proceed laying out the whole book. When completed low resolution proofs were sent to the author and client. In this instance there were very few editorial changes and the proofreader began his work. While this was occurring the cover and endpapers were designed and an ISBN number obtained.
We were also asked to produce physical hard copies, and printing quotes were gathered for the hard cover, coffee table books - with an emphasis on quality, cost and ability to deliver to our timetable. Our previous experience and relationships allowed all this to flow smoothly and when the final printer's proofs were signed off by the client we were able to meet the client's budget and deadline. The books were delivered on time and received with great praise, in good time for the official opening of IGO's new mine - as promised.
Social and organisational histories are an area of speciality for Flametree, having produced numerous books for organisations ranging in diversity from BHP to Fremantle Primary School. Our website showcases other recent examples.
