'The BooBook'
The BooBook is the latest children's book by author, illustrator and publisher Wend Binks. It is a beautifully rich story written by Jennifer Mars, about the interaction of a boy and a boo-book owl. Set high in the treetops, the story takes us on a fantastic adventure with an environmental twist.
When we first met Wendy, in 2004, she asked us to help with the design and production of her first book, 'Where’s Stripey?'. Sixteen years later, and with three other successful Stripey titles under her belt, Wendy is collaborating with author Jennifer Mars on 'The BooBook' which is, in our view, her most beautifully illustrated book to date.
Wendy came to our studio in March 2020 with a dummy book and some sketches, to discuss ideas and to plan the production process. Subsequently we consulted regularly, progressing the illustrations each time and culminating in their completion by the end of August.
The pictures had been well planned, which made our task of laying out the text onto page spreads a problem-free pleasure. Working from digital photographic files allowed us to add special effects to type, and adjust contrast and colours where small tweaks of the images were required. We worked closely with Wendy to design a cover that was eye-catching but didn’t pre-empt the storyline.
Everything came together neatly to produce a beautifully rich, atmospheric book that is full of detail and texture - qualities perfect for enhancing this tale about a boy and an owl.
The Brief
Wendy’s books entertain and also inform her readers, through the inclusion of fact pages, featuring the animal characters starring in the books – important information that may just help with the survival of animals like the BooBook owl.
