Flametree Creative is a Western Australian owned communications consultancy that specialises in transformational change. Our clients vary from one-man bands to national companies and we operate on a project basis or in a full service capacity, but our objective is always the same: to clearly differentiate our client’s business to the extent that it becomes or remains a brand leader within its category. To achieve our aims we follow a process of continuous improvement that clearly positions our client’s brand by simplifying offers and ensuring that the expectations we create are matched by the outcomes desired by our clients.


John Douglass
Creative Director

A graduate of Curtin School of Design, John commenced his career at Fremantle Arts Centre Press before launching Brown Cow Design in 1993. He has served as lead creative to: The City of Fremantle, Dunsborough Construction, Fremantle Sailing Club, Halco Tackle, Kidogo Art Institute, Mt Barker Chicken. John has designed books for Richard Woldendorp, City of Perth, UWA Press, The Town of Victoria Park, Holmes a Court Gallery, Linneys, BHP and many others. He had designed interpretative displays such as The Kalgoorlie Prospectors and Miners Hall of Fame, John Curtin Gallery and the Maritime Museum of WA.

Mark Venables
Creative Director

After a background in fine art Mark studied Graphic Design at Curtin University before working as a creative and writer in the industry in Perth and overseas. Mark formed Brimstone Creative in 1996 and as Creative Director grew the business, becoming well known for successful brand promotion across a broad range of clients. Mark now brings that experience to the Flametree team.

Dick Baynham
Brand Strategist

Dick started a boutique advertising consultancy that became one of Perth’s leading creative agencies in the 1980s and 1990s. His mentors were Al Haggar, Chairman Young & Rubicam (Australia) and David Abbott, Founder Abbott Meade Vickers. His agency merged with another in the late 1990s and he sold his shareholding to retire two years later while still in his 40s. He subsequently returned to the industry as a creative director and brand strategist. He has served on the Industry Advisory Panel for Curtin University School of Design and his work has received over 100 awards. Clients have included: Anchor Foods, AutoMasters, Bed Shed, Chooks Fresh & Tasty, FAL (Dewsons), Golden Egg Farms, HBF, Home Building Society, John Hughes, Leets, Milne Feeds, San Remo Pasta and the WA Health Dept (Quit & Nutrition).

James Eardley

James trained in England with a degree in Multi-Media Design and has over 12 year's experience. An all-rounder with a background in print and advertising, he's also experienced in websites and photography and has a sideline in Film Production. James is a Pisces, loves Marmite, travel and proper British pubs.

Matt Lloyd

Matt is a multi award winning graduate of Curtin School of Design. The boom times of the early noughties saw him creating and managing brands for many mining, brewery, banking and technology companies. After moving to Sydney Matt produced cross-media communications for Westpac, Downer EDI, Leighton Holdings and Air NZ as well as UK companies YouGov, Lancashire Group, Drax Power, Hikma Pharmaceuticals and Great Portland Estates. Since returning to Perth, Matt has become an integral member of the Flametree team. Matt is an Aquarian, enjoys designing furniture he will never make and laughing.

Alistair Mclean

An award winning graduate from Perth Central TAFE with an Advanced Diploma in graphic design. Alistair has an excellent knowledge of the different software applications used in the studio such as drawing packages, Photoshop and web applications. Alistair is our branding specialist and is often responsible for the creation of new brands and designing the applications of these brands. He is aware of the importance of creating style guides that are practical to work from as he not only creates them but is often required to follow them through to applications. Alistair has a passion for popular culture especially music, art and photography. These are part of his life, and this experience he brings to his design work.

Cameron Murray

Cameron grew up on a farm in Western Australian outback, but when he started showing more interest in art and computer studies than he did in farm work – his parents knew there was going to be trouble. What followed was years of indecision and multi-disciplinary interests, from maths and science to music, art, design and even wood and metal working – all the while studying Graphic Design and Creative Advertising at Curtin. After being awarded the Graduate of the Year in Graphic Design upon his completion of the course, he now dedicates his time to Flametree Creative, expanding his skill-set with every chance he gets.

Karolina Larsson

Born in Sweden, Karolina brings the experience of having lived and worked as a designer in Europe to the team. Specialising in magazine design and publications, Karolina has worked for ‘Perth Woman’ in Perth and ‘Allas Veckotidning’ - the Swedish ‘Woman’s Weekly’ in Sweden. She is a graduate from Curtin University with a degree in graphic design, winning awards for design computing and typography.

Erol Elcan
IT Designer/Programmer

Erol Elcan heads Flametree’s digital team, being lead programmer and IT specialist. He works predominantly with our designers in attending to our digital requirements, from websites to podcasts. Erol has a passion for all things technical and when he’s not on line he’s found on a windsurfer.

Sarah Cullen
Designer & Studio Manager

Sarah grew up in country NSW, completed a Bachelor of Communications at the University of Canberra, then moved to Melbourne to start her career. She worked in various advertising and marketing roles for companies such as Saatchi & Saatchi, Clemenger Harvie, Peregrine & Gecko’s Adventures and Fernwood Women's Health Clubs. During a seven-year stint as National Sponsorship Manager for Informa Australia, Sarah completed a Certificate IV in Graphic Design at Shillington College Melbourne. She moved to Perth three years ago in pursuit of sunshine and creative inspiration. Sarah enjoys travelling, hanging out at the beach with her rescue dog ‘Digger’ and makes a mean raw chocolate slice.

Sarah Dalziel
Social Media Strategist

Sarah is an experienced advertising and marketing manager who is stimulated by working across a variety of tasks. A creative thinker and problem solver who enjoys learning new skills. With years of ad agency experience she's always able to work under pressure, even though she says she would much rather use her time management skills to complete projects well before their deadlines.

Frans Bisschops
Special Projects

Displaying remarkable talent (for a Kiwi), Frans has brought a great contribution to the Flametree team. Although spending a lot of time as a “Mr Mum’ these days, Frans still brings his brilliant artistic flair to special projects and we hope to get him back in full harness soon.
